in 1891 the people who promoted the first golf course
in Spain could hardly imagine that such a minority game
could become, with the passing of time, a sport for the
multitudesSpain is the favourite destination for European
golfers. The British are those who tee-off most on our
golf courses, followed by the Scandinavians, the Germans
and the French. On the Costa del Sol, it’s the sun,
sea and golf which are the three great attractions and
combine to make the Costa del Sol one of the best tourist
destinations for European golfers.
The climate, with an average temperature of 26 degrees
in summer, and an almost permanent gentle breeze makes
the game of golf a pleasure; the coast’s gastronomy,
with its famous Mediterranean diet, its landscapes from
the cliffs of Nerja with its crystal clear water and
famous view-point over the sea (El Balcon de Europa),
to the famous town of Marbella and world-class marina
of Puerto Banus, with its impressive yachts and fashionable
terrace restaurants and bars.
At present there are 75 golf courses in Andalusia, with
8 more under construction. 42 of these courses are on
the Costa del Sol, located right beside the beach to
the peaks of the mountains behind it. They have all
been designed to accommodate the most experienced players
as well as the absolute beginner.
The hotels which accommodate tourists from all over
the world are numerous and well-known and their guests,
who discover the area often choose to have a second
home on the Costa del Sol. The true golf enthusiasts
decide to buy a villa or an apartment from amongst the
varied offers made by the golf courses.
There are many advantages to be obtained by purchasing
a property on a golf course. The first and most obvious
advantage is the surroundings themselves, natural landscapes
slightly modified with lakes, palms and other trees,
all perfectly maintained, with spacious natural parks
and local wildlife - the variety of birds for example
is outstanding. The very fact of living on a golf course,
with its natural surroundings combined with the proximity
of town centres makes it an ideal choice for those making
their first move to Spain or purchasing a second home.
If you become a member of the club, or play frequently,
it is easier to make friends since there are teams for
all ages, and many sporting activities are organised
making it easier to get to know people with similar
interests and from the same country.
Another attraction is the facilities on offer within
your urbanisation itself. If you enjoy practicing sport
you normally have access to the facilities of the golf
course, whether it should be tennis, paddle-tennis,
gymnasium or swimming-pool and, if you have children,
it is easy to find an activity for everyone. Alternatively
for those who simply wish to relax, there are usually
restaurants, bars, terraces and a wide variety of social
activities to be enjoyed.
Many golf courses on the coast are being constructed
with views of the sea and the mountains from the residential
accommodation and since the golf course is private property
everything situated within its boundaries is therefore
secure and has better maintenance and protection. Another
very important advantage is should you wish to sell
your property, a home on a golf course sells much quicker
than those in other areas.
However we must take into account that for the majority
of the people choosing to buy a property on a golf course,
it is normally as a second home and logically this normally
appeals to people within a medium to high income bracket
since the price of such homes is normally over 240,000
Euros.
The purchasers of this type of home are normally businessmen
and executives who know how to behave and look after
the value of their investment. Their time tends to be
spent almost exclusively on the golf course although
families of golfers visit the beach, the surrounding
areas and make use of the on-site facilities.
“The greatest golfers are simply people who think
correctly and achieve important targets”. These
words, from Doctor Bob Rotella, reveal the importance
of a mental attitude, and therefore when one is going
to purchase a home, one must also think correctly as
to what most interests you and the most convenient place
to make the investment.
Taking the above into account, the best investment,
always provided that it is a possibility and something
you can afford, is to purchase a property in surroundings
which, with time, will not just prove to be a good investment,
but during the time that you own it, it gives you what
you want.
